Spain 3 - 0 Austria
Oyarzabal (36', 89'), Porro (66')

A dominant Spain blew away an Austrian side that seemed to know the writing was already on the wall before even kicking a ball, with a deserved 3-0 victory to cruise into the last 16.

Austria had a go at frustrating Spain, and successfully managed to resist La Roja for the first 30 minutes or so of the game, before Spain’s repeated knocking on the door translated to concrete opportunities.

Spain thought they were ahead through a goal from Marc Cucurella, but a contentiously-light foul on the goalkeeper was adjudged to have occurred in the build up, and the goal was chalked off - not for the first time this tournament.

Perhaps agitated by that, Spain came to life and Oyarzabal had an effort on target saved smartly by Schlager in the Austria goal. But in the 36th minute, Spain found the breakthrough their attacking play deserved, with a low Cucurella cross being collected by Cucurella and swept past Schlager to make it 1-0.

Schlager continued his earlier heroics with a fantastic double save, touching a free kick from Baena on to the bar, before getting in the way of Lamine Yamal’s rebounded effort.

Austria had a chance of their own via sub Sasa Kalajdzic, but he couldn’t get his header on target. Down the other end, Spain’s Baena whipped in a ball from the left that Pedro Porro got on the end of to nod home to make it 2-0.

Spain made it three to wrap up the game in the 89th minute via Oyarzabal again, after he slid in his second goal of the game after getting on the end of a cross from Cucurella, who was dominant on that side of the pitch.

It’s a fifth consecutive World Cup clean sheet for Unai Simon, which equals the record set by Walter Zenga for Italy at Italia 90. He’s also surpassed Zenga’s total number of minutes without conceding in World Cups.

Spain march on to set up a tie with the winners of the Portugal v Croatia game, also happening tonight.
