Ivory Coast 1 - 2 Norway
Diallo (74’) | Nusa (39'), Haaland (86')

Norway beat Ivory Coast with an 86th minute goal to consign the African side to a Round of 32 exit and guarantee a game against Brazil in the last 16.

Then the goal came for Norway to separate the teams, via a wonderful curled finish from Nusa, who took the ball on the edge of the box from an Ødegaard pass, moved it onto his preferred right foot and unleashed a beautiful curled effort into the corner. A glorious goal.

Soon after, Norway could have made it two but Haaland couldn’t quite wrap his foot around the flick on in the box and it bounced off the defender. Seconds later, a corner was lashed across the box and Norway came within a centimeter of hitting a powerful free header. Would they come to regret those misses?

Ivory Coast then pressed for a leveller, making some threatening incursions into the Norwegian half, but seemed to be lacking a cutting edge, one of their best chances of the first half coming from a free kick that saw goalscorer Nusa booked.

The delivery from Pepe saw a header from Agbadou that flashed just past the post from 12 yards. Should have got it on target.

The second half got off to a slow start, although Pepe had an excellent opportunity to level things for Ivory Coast, although his decent effort to the near post was saved smartly by Nyland who read the intent well.

The energy of Amad Diallo, introduced in the 60th minute, stimulated the Ivory Coast attack, prompting questions of why the Manchester United man didn’t start the match.

At the other end Norway almost bundled one across the line after a smart delivery dropped into a crowded box, only for Fofana to intercept on the line with a tidy catch. Then Norway were once again denied on the line through a Diallo block, with VAR taking a quick look at some grappling in the box but deciding no action required.

And then after the second hydration break, that man Diallo scored a wonder goal,  after a 1-2 on the edge of the box, superb high speed jink and then a classy finish past Nygard. Game on.

There was some concern as Diallo went down with an injury, but after some treatment to his back on the sidelines was allowed to return to the action.

Then, in the 85th minute, the inevitable. After a great ball in from Oscar Bobb, Berg latched on to it on the edge of the box before squaring to that man Erling Haaland who slotted home unopposed from the centre of the goal to maintain his great scoring record at the tournament and keep the race open for the Golden Boot.

Haaland could have had another but couldn’t twist in the box in the 90th minute after some strong defending from Ivory Coast.

Soon after, Ivory Coast won a free kick 30 yards from goal and forced a great save from Nyland after Amad’s direct curling strike, which was heading into the top corner. A final corner was then sent in, with keeper Fofana going forwards.

But the corner sailed harmlessly in and wouldn’t be enough, as Norway closed out the result to get into the last 16 and eliminate Ivory Coast from the competition.

Haaland and Norway will face Brazil in the last 16.
