Germany 1 - 1 Paraguay
Havertz (54’) | Enciso (42’) - Paraguay win 4-3 on penalties
Paraguay delivered possibly their most significant ever result at a major tournament with a stunning victory over four-time World Cup winners Germany to dump the European side out at the Round of 32 stage.

The game went the distance after Paraguay took a first half lead with a battling defensive performance, before Germany’s Kai Havertz hit back in the second half.
With the scores level after extra time, it took a nervy shootout to separate the two teams, with the South American side ultimately emerging victorious and sparking scenes of jubilation from the Paraguay players and fans.
Paraguay got their noses ahead in the 42nd minute through a Julio Enciso goal after Germany spent a lot of the first half trying to calculate how to get through Paraguay’s study block. With 83% of the early ball and 0 shots on goal, this was a Germany that looked bereft of winning ideas.
But they would soon need to get extra creative, as Galarza’s whipped cross came in at the ideal trajectory for Enciso, and he nodded home to make it 1-0 Paraguay.
Despite an overriding impression that Germany were not taking necessary risks, they did find themselves back in the game thanks to a Wirtz cross that led to a fantastic header from Wirtz.
With the game then deadlocked again at 1-1 in extra time, there were several chances to get ahead, and Germany thought they’d pinched it with a goal from Jonathan Tah, before VAR intervened to disallow it for a soft “push” on the Paraguay goalkeeper in the build up which affected his ability to make a save.

Perhaps an element of justice after Germany had a goal not disallowed for a high boot in the game against Ecuador, although you could argue the stakes were higher in this one.
With neither side able to find the edge for the rest of extra time, and with Germany lucky that Jamal Musiala didn’t see red for a terrible tackle, the game went to penalties.
Paraguay’s Orlando Gill stepped up in goal, and became a national hero, saving spot kicks from Kai Hazertz and Nick Woltemade to ensure Paraguay’s process. That despite two missed penalties from Paraguay, with Balbuena and Sanabria unable to convert.
But in the end it was talismanic defender Jose Canale who stepped up for Paraguay to take the decisive sudden-death penalty for Paraguay, sending them through to the last 16 and Germany tumbling out of the competition.
