Switzerland 2 - 0 Algeria
Embolo (10'), (Ndoye 46')
A confident Switzerland breezed past Algeria to secure their place in the last 16 with their first knockout win at a World Cup since 1938.
One of the players of the tournament, Johan Manzambi, was involved again right from the off, as he danced down the wing before making a tidy cutback for Breel Embolo to sweep home in the 10th minute.

While Switzerland were in control from the start, that goal further took the wind out of Algeria’s sails and allowed the Swiss to control the pace of the match as Algeria looked powerless to overcome their opposition.
Switzerland have quietly gone about their business in this tournament without really outright impressing, and tonight’s game was another example of that, as in truth they were never really tested by Algeria, whose best spell came just before the break with Chaibi getting a shot off that never really looked like testing the Swiss keeper.
In the second half, Switzerland looked to cap the result, and did so almost immediately with a second goal coming just a minute after the restart. Dan Ndoye sealed the deal with a tidy finish from inside the area.

It could have been three, were it not for a sliced effort from Fabian Rieder that gave Algeria the faintest of hopes of staying in the game.
But it wasn’t to be, with Switzerland closing out the match comfortably without really seeming to need to get into top gear.
Switzerland fans will take heart from this performance still, with Okafor, Manzambi, Embolo, Ndoye and Xhaka particularly impressing in what was a professional outcome for the European side.
Manzambi may well have some suitors around the world after this tournament, and his club SC Freiburg will no doubt be resigned to that, with the softener that his value seems to be increasing exponentially as the World Cup progresses.
This is now the fourth successive World Cup last 16 place for Switzerland, underlining their tournament consistency without really thrilling over the years.
They qualify for the last 16 where they will face whoever wins the encounter between Colombia and Ghana.
