England scored in extra time to set up yet another major tournament semi-final and keep their dreams of winning a first World Cup since 1966 alive. Once again they relied on the talismanic Jude Belligham, whose performances at this World Cup will go down as one of the all-time England greats.

It wasn’t an easy ride for England, who were pushed all the way by Norway, with both sides impacted by referee calls along the way. Notable too were the extreme heat conditions, which had a visible effect on the players on both sides.

Norway took the lead in the 36th minute when Andreas Schjelderup seemed to attempt a cross from wide, only for it to end up beating Jordan Pickford and hitting the top corner of the net. Echoes of Paul Konchesky in the 2006 FA Cup Final.

England controlled much of the possession up until that point, and Jude Bellingham dragged them back into things before the stroke of half time. He received the ball from Anthony Gordon and slotted past Nyland in the Norwegian goal.

England’s usually excellent set pieces were looking a bit shaky, with Declan Rice feeling the effects of illness over the past few days. He was withdrawn at half time, along with Madueke, with Eze and Saka taking their places.

Nothing quite seemed to click for England after that, with Norway starting to pin England back, especially with Nusa and Bobb’s width high up the pitch acting as a net to hem them in. Norway had the ball in the back of the net after a well worked corner routine, only for replays to show a clear Haaland push on Elliot Anderson and the goal to be disallowed.

Norway hit the crossbar soon after as they piled forwards looking for a second goal. Entering into extra time, the Norwegian manager made the bold call to withdraw Erling Haaland, who seemed to have run out of energy and was largely ineffective against the English defence. This was the first time in 15 matches for Norway that he hadn’t scored.

And in extra time, Morgan Rogers powered forwards and took a shot to the middle of the goal. Nyland went down to make the save but parried it to the feet of the onrushing Jude Bellingham, who smashed home his second of the night and sixth of the tournament.

Of all of England’s goals at this tournament, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham have scored all but one, that extra one coming from Marcus Rashford.

England now head into the World Cup semi final for the third time since 1966. They’ll face Argentina or Switzerland.
